9+ Best AI Voice Generator Tools: Reviewed (for 2024)
Key Takeaways:
My top choice for audiobook creators and video content creators who speak in English is ElevenLabs! I’ve tried all the top voice tools, and this program sounds the most realistic and has the most emotion and nuances in its voices! It has a free trial, and it’s quite affordable if want to be able to download your audio files.
How do you know which AI voice generator will give you the most realistic and natural voices, and how do you know which one you should choose for your next film, video, or even audiobook project?
When I decided to record the audiobook version of my novel, Iron Dogs, this technology wasn’t even available – and that was just a few short years ago. As an actor, I felt I could give my novel the performance it deserved, but I know not every author or content creator is an actor, or can even afford to hire one for that matter.
AI voice generators just might be the way to bridge that gap, especially for short-form content like presentations or online videos.
In this article, I’ve put together a list of the nine best AI voice generator tools that I consider to be the most realistic and natural sounding. I’ll cover their features, use cases, pros, cons, and pricing to help you decide which one is right for you.

What Are the Best AI Voice Generators?
1. ElevenLabs
ElevenLabs is my top choice for AI voice generation - it's extremely affordable, it has the most realistic-sounding voices of any that I tried, and it can even help you clone your own voice!
ElevenLabs gives you tons of options for customizing their voices, and it's also really easy to use. They've even got a free trial, so you can try it out to see what you think!
ElevenLabs is a great text-to-speech software that can make voices in many languages and styles sound very natural.
Top Benefits
- Elevenlabs uses AI to create surprisingly realistic, human-like voices.
- Their voice models can speak in dozens of languages and accents from all over the world.
- This tool can grasp the context of the words it’s speaking, which gives it a more natural sound.
- There are tons of different voice styles and tone adjustments you can choose from.
- The audio output is clear and professional-sounding, great for almost any use!
Pricing
- Free Plan: Get 10,000 characters per month (this goes fast though!).
- Starter Plan ($5/month): Get 30,000 characters per month. A commercial license is included.
- Creator Plan ($22/month): Get 100,000 characters per month, and get professional voice cloning of your own voice.
- Pro Plan ($99/month): Get 500,000 characters per month.
- Scale ($330/month): Get 2,000,000 characters per month.
Pro Tip: I recommend the Creator plan as you get a fantastic clone of your own voice along with about 2 hours of voiceovers each month. It’s a great deal at just $22 for the most realistic-sounding voices of any that I tried!
ElevenLabs Pros
ElevenLabs Cons
My Experience Using ElevenLabs
If you want to open a free account with ElevenLabs, they’ll start you out with 10,000 free credits, which lets you try out all their tools a few times.
After logging in, you’ll be brought to the Speech Synthesis page.
Here, you can use pre-loaded voices for ‘text to speech’ or ‘speech to speech.’
There’s dozens of names you can choose from, and then you can go further and edit their voice settings as well.
In the voice settings, you can customize the templated voices by adjusting the language model, stability, similarity degree, and style exaggeration.
Once you’re done editing the settings, click ‘Generate speech’ to get your final results. Even on the free plan, you can download the voiceovers directly to your computer.
I was surprised at how much inflection the fake AI voices did with my intro paragraph test.
On the left side of the screen, you can find the toolbar that takes you to other features.
In addition to the Speech tab, you can view voices, projects, dubbing, and payouts.
In the voices tab, you’ll find VoiceLab and the Voice Library.
VoiceLab is where you’ll keep all of your favorite voices, including your favorite cloned or templated voices.
I like the tags they use to describe the voice, like “British,” “young,” and “female.” I’m sure it makes it way easier to tell the voices apart if you have a lot in here.
If you click on “Add Generative or Cloned Voice,” you’ll see a popup.
Sadly, voice cloning is only available for paid users – so I went with Voice Design.
In Voice Design, you can create a new voice and decide on the gender, age, accent, and accent strength.
Click ‘Generate’ and you’ll have your new voice saved and ready to use in your VoiceLab.
In the Voice Library, you can choose from 100+ premade voices.
I really like the advanced filter option that lets you filter by category, gender, age, and language. This is super handy if you already know what you’re looking for.
Once you find voices you like, you can add them to your VoiceLab so you can easily access them for any future projects.
In the Dubbing tab, you can upload a video directly, or post a URL from YouTube, TikTok, Twitter, Vimeo, etc. Then you can choose which language you want the dubbed language to be in.
I chose a YouTube clip to test out.
After waiting a few minutes for it to generate, I was able to view the clip before downloading, and honestly… I was super impressed!! All of the dubbed voices were very similar to the original actor’s voice and said with the same speed and inflections.
Somehow, they were able to even add in all the sound effects and background noises while still removing the original dialogue. This feature took me by surprise!
All in all, ElevenLabs was very easy to navigate and had a ton of different tools to play around with. The only thing I thought it was lacking was the ability to change the tone and inflection on different words in the text-to-speech section. While there are many options, there isn’t advanced customization of the pre-made voices.
Bottom Line
ElevenLabs is a powerful AI tool for professional voice actors, studios, media producers, and marketing agencies who need the highest quality and most realistic AI-generated voices.
If your primary need is voice cloning or creating ultra-realistic characters, ElevenLabs is the top choice. However, for simpler voiceover needs or a tighter budget, consider Lovo.ai or Listnr.
2. Lovo.ai
Lovo is another good AI voice generator, and it gives you some fun celebrity voices to try out! However, it's definitely more expensive than some other voice generator tools.
Overview
Lovo.ai offers a great option for those looking for great AI-generated speech. The software is easy to use, and it produces high-quality results.
You can also play around with tons of customization options in Lovo, which lets you create voices that sound more realistic. The software is always being updated with more features and improvements!
Top Benefits
- Lovo has a wide range of language and dialect options so you can find the most natural-sounding voices for your project.
- Your audience will always understand what you’re saying thanks to Lovo’s high-quality standards in their voices.
- You can control the speed and pitch of the generated voice, which makes it easy to create natural-sounding dialogue.
- Lovo.ai constantly updates its voice library, so you’ll always have access to the latest and greatest voices.
- The team behind Lovo.ai is responsive and helpful, so you can get all the support you need to make your project successful.
Lovo.ai Pricing
Lovo.ai offers four pricing tiers (including a free version!):
- Free Version: This lets you try out the software for 14 days, but you can’t download anything.
- Basic ($29/month): Includes unlimited access to all AI voices, 5 voice clones, up to 2 hours of voice generation each month, and commercial rights to all AI voice-generated downloads!
- Pro ($48/month): Includes everything from Basic + unlimited voice cloning and up to 5 hours of voice generation each month.
- Pro+ ($149/month): Includes everything from previous plans and up to 20 hours of voice generation each month.
Pro Tip: I think the Basic plan is all most users would need, as you get voice clones and two hours of AI voiceover each month, along with the commercial rights to the voices generated.
However, ElevenLabs is a bit cheaper for the same amount of voiceover time – the only advantage here is if you need more than one voice cloned!
My Experience Using Lovo.ai
If you decide to try the free trial for Lovo.ai, you’ll have 20 minutes of voice generation credits to try out the platform.
After creating a new account, this pop-up will appear to have you create a new project. From here, you can try ‘AI Voice and Video,’ ‘Short Voiceover,’ or ‘Auto Subtitles.’ First, I tried the Short Voiceover option.
It took me to a screen where you can enter text to turn into a voiceover.
It automatically gave me Sophia as a voice, and you do have the option to add in certain pronunciations in case the AI doesn’t pronounce something correctly. If you have the paid plan, you can also change the emphasis and pauses in the voice for ultimate customization.
To change the voice, click on the arrow next to the AI name.
The ‘Select a voice’ box will appear. From here, you can choose from recommended voices, voices in different languages and accents, a voice cloning tool, or bookmarked voices that you can save for later.
There were dozens of templated voices to choose from with the ability to sort through them depending on gender, age, and use case. And like ElevenLabs, I like the tags on the voices that give you more insight into what the voice will sound like.
I did appreciate that the free trial lets you try out the voice cloning tool. I uploaded a voice memo from myself to see if it could clone my voice.
It did a pretty decent job, but it wasn’t perfect. I think if I uploaded more than one sample it would have done a better job.
If you choose the ‘AI Voice and Video’ box when starting a new project, you’ll get directed to this interface that looks more like a regular video editor area.
It had a few pop-up tutorials showing me where things were, which I appreciated.
Here, you can have multiple speaking styles at once in case you want your AIs to have more of a conversation. It was easy to move the clips around, change the speakers, and change the text.
You can also change the video aspect ratio size, select videos and images to add in, create subtitles and text on screen, ask the AI writer for script ideas, or generate AI photos.
If you want to add subtitles, you can have it automatically create subtitles from the voiceovers, write in your own subtitles, or upload an SRT file.
Overall, I liked Lovo.ai because of all the different customization options and other tools included in their platform. It gives you a lot of versatility and limits the need to go to other sites. It’s perfect for creating an AI-generated video all in one place.
I also liked that you can customize the dialect on the pre-made voices, unlike ElevenLabs. BUT, I did think ElevenLabs’ voices sounded a bit more realistic – so there are positives and negatives to each.
Lovo.ai Pros
Lovo.ai Cons
Bottom Line
With Lovo.ai, you can create realistic voiceovers for any content, including videos, podcasts, and audiobooks. If you’re looking for a big voice library, natural-sounding voices, and advanced editing tools, Lovo is a great choice!
If you’re a beginner on a tight budget and need a simple solution, Listnr might be a better starting point. If you just want the most realistic voices, go with ElevenLabs.
3. Listnr
Listnr is a fantastic choice for anyone who wants to create a podcast, but doesn't want to use their real voice! Listnr has a built-in podcasting interface that will help you easily upload your podcast to all the popular podcasting platforms!
Plus, their voices sound extremely realistic.
Overview
Listnr uses powerful artificial intelligence technology to create computer-generated voice files from text, which can be used for podcasts, videos, and other media.
Top Benefits
- Generate voice files from a text in multiple languages
- Create podcasts, videos, and other media
- Use their podcast interface to create your AI-powered podcast on one platform! Post podcasts to all the usual places, such as iTunes, Spotify, and Google podcasts.
Listnr Pricing
Listnr has various pricing options, depending on how many words you need to generate per month.
- Free Plan: only 1000 words per month.
- Student ($5/month): Perfect for students.
- Individual ($19/month): Best for solo producers.
- Solo ($39/month): Perfect for solo creators or small teams.
- Startup ($59/month): Perfect for SMBs and agencies.
Pro Tip: Most users will love the Individual Plan – it’s budget-friendly at $19 a month, and it gives you 20,000 words each month.
How to Use Listnr
With the free Listnr plan, you can create voiceovers of 1000 words/month.
After creating a new account, you’ll be redirected to their homepage.
Use the toolbar on the right to navigate to different tabs like voiceovers, podcasts, voice cloning, all text-to-speech voices, video editor, and more.
Pro Tip: Voice cloning is NOT available with the free version.
I clicked on “+ New TTS Voiceover” to create a text-to-speech voiceover. It gave me the option to upload an article URL or enter manual text.
I clicked on “Create Using Editor.”
In the editor, you can enter your text and play around with the settings.
There are several voices to choose from, but not as many as the previous two platforms on this list. A lot of the voices were for paid plans only, so that was a little limiting.
But you can customize them with style, speed, pronunciations, and pauses. I liked the different pause lengths you could add after certain grammar punctuation marks – you could easily add these in your text to get a more natural sounding speed.
When you’re done messing with the settings, you can generate the new voiceover and download it directly to your computer!
One of the more unique features of Listnr is its podcast section. You can easily import your podcast episodes and turn them into text for show notes or blog posts.
Browse through all the different voices and bookmark your favorites for future use. They have 1000+ voices in 100+ languages!!
I do wish they gave more description of what the voice style is so it’s easier to search for what you’re looking for.
Listnr Pros
Listnr Cons
Bottom Line
Overall, Listnr is a versatile tool best for content creators, educators, businesses, and anyone who needs to create high-quality voiceovers quickly and easily.
If you want ease of use, affordability, and a wide range of voice options, Listnr is definitely worth considering. But if your project needs the most nuanced and natural-sounding voiceovers, more advanced software might be better.
4. Altered
Altered is a fantastic choice if you want to use your own voice for a creative project, but just a little bit different! You can use Altered to give your voice a new accent or to play each role in a multi-character audiobook or podcast.
Altered is a very powerful platform if you want to play around with adapting your own voice!
Overview
Altered Studio is an advanced voice content creation platform that has multiple AI voice technologies. You can use it to change your own voice or create a new AI voice altogether!
Create your own multi-character productions, modify accents, and transform your audio content into any language, all from one platform.
Top Benefits
- Cross-Platform Compatibility: Use Altered online, or download it onto your Windows or Mac for local access.
- Unique Technology: Exclusive access to their new Speech-To-Speech, Performance-To-Performance Speech Synthesis technology.
- Complete Creative Control: Lead multi-character productions and generate engaging performances with complex human emotions – all simply by changing your own voice!
- Transcription and Translation: Use tools to transcribe, add Voice-Over with Text-To-Speech, and translate your audio files into multiple languages.
- Cost and Time Efficient: Reduces the costs and time typically needed with voice-over production, freeing you to focus on the creative aspects.
Pricing
- Free Plan: Try out Altered for free!
- Real-Time: $6/month
- Creator: $40/month
- Professional: $120/month
Pro Tip: The Creator Plan is the best deal if you want a significant amount of voice morphing minutes each month. If not, go for the Real-time plan.
How to Use Altered
After starting a free plan with Altered, you’ll be taken to the home page of their tool.
From here, you can start creating using their real-time morphing, post-production morphing, text-to-speech, or rapid voice creation tool.
Pro Tip: Real-time morphing is only available if you download Altered’s Windows program.
You can also reach these features using the right-hand toolbar.
Post-production voice morphing is where you can upload yourself speaking and change that into a different voice.
You can’t preview the voice as you adjust the settings, so it was a little hard to know what each setting would change and how that would make it sound in the end. That’s a bummer because anytime you want to preview changes you’ve made, you’ll need to use up some credits to listen to the new voice.
I was pretty blown away though after changing my voice! It sounded pretty realistic, but just had a few minor mispronunciations.
Definitely a cool tool if you want to go incognito.
The text-to-speech tool was similar to the other platforms we’ve tested.
Enter your text, pick a voice, adjust some settings, and generate your new voiceover file.
I did like their different style choices for the voices, like aggressive, narration, neutral, news, and more.
While they did have a good amount of premade voices, it wasn’t nearly as many as the other programs.
It was easy to sort through them and find what you’re looking for.
The voice cloning tool was a little confusing.
It only works as a morphing tool, not a regular text-to-speech tool. You have to upload your voice and then upload dialogue of something else, then it will morph that dialogue into your voice that you uploaded.
Basically, you can morph one voice into a custom voice. This is better for inflections, but I do wish they had the option to do voice cloning for text-to-speech.
Their voice editor tool was not used for videos like the other platforms, but more for editing audio files and adding audio effects.
You can generate voices directly in their editor and see the waveforms.
You can add different effects to these voices, like a denoiser, voice cleaner, amplifier, etc. This is a great feature if you want to clean up dialogue for videos or podcasts, making it crisp and clear.
Definitely, the highlight of using Altered was the voice morphing tool!
Altered Pros
Altered Cons
Bottom Line
Altered Studio is a powerful tool for content creators, podcast editors, and streamers who want to enhance their own recorded voices or add unique voice effects to their projects.
If you enjoy audio editing and want to experiment with altering your own voice for storytelling or entertainment, Altered Studio is a super unique and creative tool.
If you’re looking for a more user-friendly platform to create entirely new AI voices from scratch, look at one of the other software on this list.

How To Use Murf

You can select a voice, and choose their style, pitch, speed, pauses, and pronunciations.
On the right toolbar, you can import a script instead of writing manually, add a video or sounds to accompany your voiceover, use the voice changer to upload an audio file and convert it into text for a new synthetic voice, or use their translator to change voices into different languages.
Pro Tip: Their translate feature is only available for Enterprise clients.
You can choose from over 120 voices and 20+ languages!
Filter through all these voices by choosing a style, gender, age, and ethnicity.
Before you generate a voiceover, you can add emphasis to each sentence. This is a pretty cool feature!
Add nodes to the words that you want the new voice to highlight.
At the bottom of the home interface, you can open the timeline preview to see the voiceover waveforms.
Click the plus sign by the video or music icons to upload your own videos or add a background track from Murf’s royalty-free music library.
Overall, I thought Murf was very user-friendly with a wide variety of customization tools for text-to-speech. It didn’t have a ton of other features, but if you’re looking for custom text-to-speech, this is all you need!
Murf Pros
Murf Cons
Bottom Line
Murf is best for users who need a lot of customization options to create natural-sounding voices. If you’re looking for realistic-sounding speech styles, then Murf is a great option to consider.
6. Play.ht
Play.ht is another great AI voice software - but this one is better for large businesses. Their pricing structure is such as the bigger plans are the best value - and, while expensive, they are a great deal for bigger businesses.

- High-Quality: The audio quality is excellent, and the results are realistic and believable.
- Intuitive Interface: User-friendly and easy to use, even if you’re not an expert in AI voice generation.
Play.ht Pricing
Play.ht has four tiers of pricing, but most creatives and freelancers will be best served at the Unlimited level. Options include (all prices displayed are the monthly costs if you pay yearly):
- Free Plan: one voice clone, 12,500 characters.

- Unlimited ($99/month): Includes unlimited characters per month, unlimited instant voice clones, commercial use, and fast generations.
- Enterprise (custom pricing): Contact them to learn more.
Play.ht Pros
Play.ht Cons
Bottom Line
PlayHT is a well-rounded tool for content creators, businesses, and anyone who needs high-quality AI voiceovers with some level of customization.
The free plan lets you experiment before committing, and the integration with other tools can be a time-saver. However, if you need voice cloning or you’re a professional user with very specific needs for extensive customization, consider checking out other options.
7. Resemble.ai
Resemble AI is a good choice for businesses who are looking for a pay-as-you-go option for AI voice generation.

Resemble Pros
Resemble Cons
Bottom Line

If you need ultra-realistic voice cloning or want to preserve the essence of an existing voice, Resemble.ai is a top choice. But for simpler voiceover needs with a wider range of pre-made voices or a tighter budget, consider options like Listnr, Lovo.ai, or Murf. If you don’t need voice cloning and want something easier to use, PlayHT might be a good option.
8. Respeecher

Respeecher Pros
Respeecher Cons
Bottom Line

It’s also a meaningful option for people with health conditions such as ALS, cancer, or stroke.
9. Speechelo
Speechelo is a good option if you want a program where you pay once and use it forever!

Speechelo Pros
Speechelo Cons
Bottom Line
SSpeechelo is a good option for beginners or anyone who wants a simple and affordable AI voiceover generator, and doesn’t care as much about how realistic the voices sound.
If you’re looking for high-quality, natural-sounding voices with lots of customization options or advanced features, consider exploring tools like Lovo.ai, Murf, or PlayHT.
What Are AI Voice Generators?
AI voice generators can create lifelike human voices by taking recorded speech samples and using them to create new, synthetic speech.
Some voice generators are more realistic than others, and some are better at imitating specific accents and dialects.
You can also find AI voice generators within AI video generator software programs like Synthesia, InVideo, and HeyGen.
Summary
All in all, I recommend ElevenLabs for most people’s AI voice generation needs. It’s 100% the most realistic-sounding voices available right now, and it’s affordable.
And don’t forget that if you don’t like the voices the AI creates, you can always try recording your own voice (or a friend’s!) using traditional voice-over software and a voiceover microphone!
