The Best Synthesia Alternatives of 2024 [With Video Examples!]

synthesia alternatives

The world is moving fast, continuously driving us to find easy and faster ways to do things. From using supercomputers to now creating and editing videos with generative AI, things can only get better.

With all the capabilities of a voice artist, video editor, and human-AI avatars, makes it easy to create AI videos in record time, reducing the stress of traditional video creation.

People who hate being on video will love how easy it is to use AI avatar generator software programs to create educational or training videos from just a PowerPoint, PDF, or an article!

As a filmmaker and video content creator myself, I’ve looked at and tried out many different AI video tools. Synthesia is a unique tool in that it’s got tons of digital avatars to choose from, and they look and sound pretty realistic (you’re not going to mistake their avatars for real people yet, but maybe one day…!).

However, there are some other tools that have different or alternative features, and that’s what we’re going to look at in this article.

In order to really tell the different software programs apart, it’s really good to see each of them in action!

Here’s a video I made using the Synthesia AI software. Take a look, and notice how their avatars look, move, and sound. You’ll be able to compare this video to other videos made with some of the other programs later in this article.

NOTE: This video was created by me using Synthesia. The images were created by me in Canva, and the script was written by me.

I’ve done a deep dive into AI-generated videos, and these are the best alternatives to Synthesia that I’ve found to date. Read on to learn more!

best Alternative Overall

1. HeyGen – Best Overall (Most Realistic Avatars)

Synthesia alternative: HeyGen AI video maker

Quick Take

HeyGen is my overall favorite AI avatar generator. Its avatars look WAY more realistic than any of their competitors (including Synthesia!). HeyGen is trusted by several top brands like Amazon and Salesforce, and it provides a fantastic alternative to being on camera for small teams, solopreneurs, and online influencers!

Key Features

  • It’s got 100+ diverse and customizable human avatars, helping you personalize your videos and connect with your audience.
  • My favorite feature is their “instant avatar”, which lets you create a digital avatar version of yourself! Seriously, try it out for yourself – you’ll be amazed!
  • The software includes tons of stock images and video footage, and there’s even an AI image generator for when you can’t find what you are looking for in the stock images!
  • HeyGen has partnered with ElevenLabs, so its AI voices sound super-realistic (the best of any that I tried!).

What I Like Most About HeyGen

  • HeyGen is the only AI avatar program (so far) that is able to create an instant avatar of you! It’s so much fun to play around with, and it’s free to create!
  • HeyGen uses the AI voices from Elevenlabs, which has the most realistic-sounding voices! This software has the most realistic-sounding voices of any of the programs that I tried.
  • HeyGen’s user interface looks a lot like Canva’s, which made it very familiar to me.
  • It includes TONS of stock images and videos that you can use in your videos, making your videos super engaging and attention-grabbing for viewers.
  • HeyGen also includes an AI image generator right inside the software program – it’s so easy to use!
  • Love their free trial video – you can make a video of up to one minute for free, including your avatar of yourself!

What I Didn’t Like About HeyGen

  • The program has a bit of a learning curve. I checked out their YouTube channel and found it very helpful for learning to use the various features!

HeyGen Pricing
  • The Free plan: Provides one free credit, 1-minute maximum video duration, one seat, 120+ human avatars, 300+ voices, and basic features.
  • The Creator plan: Costs $29 per month and includes 15 credits per month, a 5-minute maximum video duration, one seat, and premium features like PowerPoint import and auto-captions. If you pay yearly, it’s just $24/month.
  • The Business plan: Priced at $89 per month, offering 30 credits per month, 20-minute maximum video duration, 3 seats, and additional advanced features like 4K resolution and priority video processing. If you pay yearly, it’s $72/month.
  • The Enterprise plan: Customized and provides all the benefits of the Business plan along with tailored solutions and dedicated support.

My Experience With HeyGen

HeyGen was honestly not the easiest program to use, but it was worth the learning curve due to how amazing its avatars are! I think it’s a bit trickier than some of the programs as it just has so many more features.

The interface is quite similar-looking to the interface of Canva, so if you know that program, you’ll find HeyGen a bit easier to use. Here’s how the interface looked when I was creating my video:

HeyGen interface

You’re able to customize pretty much every part of your video. I added a stock image as a background, a stock video, and then an AI-generated image (the cavemen!). I also added one of my own slides as a background to one part of the video. I honestly loved everything about HeyGen, once I sort of found my way around the program.

I was able to click the “text” button to add text to a slide, I was able to choose a “public avatar” (make sure you don’t choose one with the little yellow sign at the bottom left when you are creating a free video – those are only for paying customers).

I was able to change the speed and pitch of the voice (if I wanted to), and the position of the avatar within each slide. HeyGen is very customizable! Here’s the finished video, using one of their avatars.

NOTE: This video was created by me using HeyGen. The script was written by me.

Bottom Line

Overall, HeyGen is my top choice for a alternative for Synthesia if you are a solopreneur, small-to-medium sized business, or an influencer. HeyGen is hands down the best AI avatar generator out there right now. Check it out for yourself by watching all of the videos I created when doing the research for this article! Their avatars look the most lifelike, and they sound -almost- human-ish!

HeyGen is super easy to use, includes tons of images, videos and music, and has the most realistic voices of any of the programs that I tried. Take advantage of the free trial and give it a try – you have nothing to lose by exploring HeyGen!

Best For Businesses

2. Colossyan – Best For Multiple Avatars in a Scene

Colossyan video generation software, an alternative to Synthesia

Quick Take

Colossyan is a great alternative to Synthesia. It has lots of avatar options, they look reasonably realistic, and you can even use up to four avatars in a video (with a Pro subscription).

It’s definitely meant more for businesses, rather than for solopreneurs or those looking for social media videos. It’s got lots of great features that will work for educators and businesses.

Top Features

  • Colossyan offers Avatar Conversations, enabling you to create interactive learning experiences that foster student engagement.
  • Has a great 14-day free trial with 5 minutes of video and 5 scenes.
  • Colossyan is unique in that it allows you to include up to four AI avatars in your videos. This can help make the video more interesting to watch for your viewers. It was fun to make the avatars have conversations together!
  • I liked how you can change the emotional tone of some of the avatars (i.e., ‘happy’ vs. ‘excited’) – this helped add some interest to the video.

What I Like About Colossyan

  • Colossyan is one of the easiest-to-use AI avatar programs that I’ve tried.
  • Has great chat support – I had difficulty rendering one video and they responded to me within the hour.
  • Colossyan has great branding features, which is great for larger businesses.
  • The Colossyan interface is clean and uncluttered. It’s very easy to learn and use.

What I Don’t Like About Colossyan

  • Their background music options are very limited. However, you can upload your own music.
  • The mouth movements of their avatars looked a bit “off” in my videos.

colossyan pricing
  • The Starter plan: Priced at $35 per month and includes features such as a commercial license, 30+ premium avatars, full HD quality, and the ability to upload custom images and video clips.
  • The Pro plan: Costs $120 per month and provides additional features like Avatar Conversations with two avatars, auto-translation to one other language, and more.
  • The Enterprise plan: Offers customized and unlimited options for companies/agencies, with features including unlimited video production, all premium human avatars, ultra HD quality, team collaboration, brand kits, and customer success manager. You can contact the sales team for detailed pricing.

My Experience With Colossyan

I found Colossyan very easy to use. I loved that it has easy to find “save” and “undo” buttons. There were lots of templates to make creating the video easy.

Colossyan is unique in that it allows more than one avatar in each scene – up to a maximum of 4. When I made the video below, I used a few different avatars so I could get a feel for how realistic they look. Colossyan’s avatars look reasonably human-looking.

I liked that they move slightly in human-like ways (for example, they move their hands at random times, and the bodies sway back and forth slightly, making them look a little less “robotic”).

Here’s what the interface looks like when you are creating your video:

Colossyan interface

I thought it was interesting that you can change the emotion of some of the avatars (“happy” vs “excited”), but I did note that the music choices were very limited.

When the video was generated, I noticed that the mouth movements of the avatars were “off” by quite a bit. The bodies looked pretty good, but the faces weren’t amazing. Take a look at the video below to see how the avatars turned out!

NOTE: This video was created by me using Colossyan. The images were created by me in Canva, and the script was written by me.

Bottom Line

Overall, Colossyan is a fantastic AI avatar generator for larger businesses. It’s fantastic for training videos for employees, as it has lots of features to keep viewers engaged (i.e., more than one face in the videos, you can change the emotional tone of the voice, lots of templates to choose from). I wasn’t impressed with the mouth movements of the avatars, but the body movements looked quite realistic.

best For Real-Time Conversations

3. DeepBrain AI – Best If You Need Read-Time Avatar Conversations

Synthesia alternative, DeepBrain AI video generation software

Quick Take

DeepBrain AI is an AI video generation SaaS tool offering a range of advanced features.

DeepBrain can generate AI avatar videos, but it also really shines with its ability to use the AI avatars to have a conversation with someone in real-time. Imagine all the business uses for this technology!

Top Features

  • DeepBrain AI offers Rememory, allowing you to easily convert text into captivating videos and communicate your message effectively.
  • With AI avatars, DeepBrain AI empowers you to create personalized and dynamic characters.
  • The Text-to-Video feature transforms written content into compelling video content, saving you time and effort in video creation.
  • Its AI video maker automates the video creation process, generating high-quality videos with minimal manual intervention.

What I Like About DeepBrain

  • Deepbrain works very similarly to the programs described above.
  • There are lots of video templates available, and quite a few avatars.
  • You can create a video for free to try it out.

What I Don’t Like About DeepBrain

  • Deepbrain’s avatars look less realistic than the other choices above.
  • I didn’t like that there was no autosave or “undo” button.
  • It’s not as easy to use as some other programs I tried.

RELATED: You can read my full review of DeepBrain here!

DeepBrain video maker plans and pricing
  • The Starter plan: Priced at $30 per month, providing 10 minutes of video creation per month, up to 6 scenes per video, and access to 100+ AI virtual human avatars and 80+ languages.
  • The Pro plan: Available at $225 per month or $2,160 per year, offering 90 minutes of video creation per month, up to 25 scenes per video, priority video processing, API access, and other Pro features.
  • The Enterprise plan: This includes all Pro features, up to 50 scenes per video, custom AI avatars, 24/7 priority support, and more.

My Experience With DeepBrain

Deepbrain has a pretty simple layout with lots of video templates and avatars. It took me a while to learn how to create a video using this software – there was a bit of a learning curve.

One thing I really noticed was that there there was no “undo” button in the interface. I also found it difficult to know how to “save” the video as I went – in the end, I had to click the “back” button and it would say “do you want to save your video?” and I would say “yes”.

Deepbrain Interface

I did appreciate that there is a chat function that I could use to contact support.

In the end, their avatars were not my favorite. They looked even less “realistic” than some of the other choices in this list. Take a look at the video below to see for yourself!

NOTE: This video was created by me using Deepbrain, and the script was written by me.

Bottom Line

Overall, Deepbrain is a standard AI avatar generator program. Where it shines is with the capability to have real-time conversations with the avatars. I recommend looking into it if you want to have that option for your online customers!

best Budget Version

With its cutting-edge AI technology, provides unparalleled voice synthesis capabilities, enabling the generation of realistic and high-quality voices for any project.

Whether it’s for e-learning courses, voiceover work, or interactive applications, empowers users to create audio content.

Quick Take

Synthesys is a budget-friendly option for AI avatars – however, it does show. This is not my favorite AI avatar program, as its avatars look and sound less realistic than other programs.

Top Benefits

  • Has a free trial, so you can try it out.
  • Has many templates for easy video production.
  • Includes transitions between slides.
  • You can change the speed and pitch of the voices.

What I Like About Synthesys

  • You get 50 minutes of AI avatar video for just $35!
  • You get to make two cloned AI voices.

What I Don’t Like About Synthesys

  • It wasn’t easy to use.
  • The avatars don’t look or sound very realistic.
  • No autosave as you go.

Synthesys-AI-Studio Pricing
  • Human Studio Synthesys: Priced at $36 per month, providing unlimited video creation and access to 73 Humatars with extra outfits, 140 languages, and 374 voices.
  • The Audio Synthesys: Priced at $27 per month, offering unlimited voiceover downloads, access to 38 human voices, and support for 140 languages.

  • Enterprise plan: Customized features for large teams.

All plans come with a 7-day money-back guarantee.

My Experience with Synthesys

OK, I didn’t find Synthesys very easy to use. While it did have an easy-to-find “undo” button, it didn’t autosave my work, which was annoying.

Synthesys had the smallest number of AI avatar choices (about 30) of all the programs I tried. The avatar mouth barely moves in the video, although it did do some realistic-looking hand gestures.

Synthysis interface

Overall, Synthesys was not my favorite program to use (or watch). Take a look at the video below and let me know your thoughts!

NOTE: This video was created by me using Synthesys. The background image was created by me in Canva, and the script was written by me.

Bottom Line

Synthesys is ok for making shorter AI avatar videos, but I wouldn’t rely on it for longer-form videos.

Things to Consider When Looking for a Alternative

When looking for an alternative to, consider these factors:

Evaluate the alternative’s features and capabilities to ensure they align with your requirements. Look for options that offer various AI avatars, language support, customization options, and other key features crucial to your video creation needs.

Compare the pricing structures and plans of different alternatives. Consider the cost per minute or subscription fees, available credits, and the value you get for the price. Determine which offers the most cost-effective solution for your budget.

Ease of Use

Consider the user-friendliness and ease of use of the alternative. Look for a platform with an intuitive interface, straightforward workflows, and user-friendly tools. All these will help to simplify the video creation process, even for non-technical users.

Video Quality and Customization

Assess the quality of videos produced by the alternative. Look for options that offer high-definition video output and provide customization options. For instance, you can check if you can upload your images and videos, add captions, and apply branding elements. Thus, you can ensure your videos align with your brand identity.

Customer Support

Customer support agents offering help to customers on video platform

Consider the level of customer support and available resources offered by the alternative. Choose platforms that provide responsive customer support, detailed documentation, tutorials, and a supportive community.

Integration and Compatibility

You’ll likely be using other tools in your workflow. So, assess whether the alternative can integrate with them. Look for options that offer integrations with popular video editing software, content management systems, or marketing platforms.

If you anticipate the need for increased video production or have evolving requirements, choose a solution that can accommodate this. An ideal one will offer flexible plans or customizable options.

People working in a team with a collaborative software

If you work in a team environment, consider the collaboration features provided by the alternative. Look for options that allow multiple users to collaborate on video projects, assign roles and permissions, and facilitate seamless teamwork.

You could even look into the newer AI video editing programs that use artificial intelligence to help make editing videos easier than ever!
