My Experience Using VideoScribe

After creating a free account with VideoScribe, they immediately took me to their template page. They had a whole category for whiteboard animation videos, which I thought was very convenient.

I went into one of their templates and started playing around with the interface. They had a lot of pop ups explaining where everything was, which really came in handy.

I found their layout quite interesting as they had the individual scenes grouped on the left side, and on the bottom they had the icons showing of each element in the selected scene. As a video editor myself, I’m used to seeing the elements stacked on a timeline. It only took a few minutes of playing around to get used to this layout.

After I figured out how to add the hand writing effect to different elements in the video, I was surprised at how many options there was to choose from. Although, I found it funny that they used people’s names to describe the hand type as if that’s supposed to mean something to me (haha).

They had all different ethnicities and different types of markers too!

If you wanted to follow along with the template, it was pretty easy to just customize the text and images pretty quick.

If you wanted to create your own whiteboard animation from scratch, that was possible too. It would just take more time to design the slide, find the different images, and add the effects.

When opening the app for the first time, it immediately asked if I wanted to try some tutorials, so I figured why not!

Now we’re starting to get into the world of AI! Moovly has a few ‘Quick Start’ features available where you have the option to start a new project from scratch, start with a template, use AI to help you start a script and video, or use AI to help you generate a video from your script.

While these options are pretty cool to have, I went with the template for our purposes today.

I was actually surprised they only had one whiteboard template to choose from. Then when I tried to use the template, the customization options were very limited.

So after playing around here, I decided to start a project from scratch.

Despite the template section lacking, I was pleasantly surprised with their video interface. It was super easy to use and I was able to immediately find where to add a hand drawing the text.

Not only can the hand write the text, but it’s also able to drag elements in and out.

As far as hand varieties go, it had the basics! Not as good as VideoScribe, but it will get the job done.

The library in Moovly has a ton of drawings and designs you can choose from. My favorite was this folder called ‘Doodle Marker’ which let the hand draw any of those designs – that felt a lot more professional than only being able to drag photos on.

Also, the timeline was super easy to use and I love how it showed you how long the animation lasted for and you could easily drag the start and stop points to get the length you wanted.

After signing up for Vyond, they took me to their template library to start a project. They had 43 whiteboard templates, which I found quite impressive! Definitely a wider range than most other sites I tested out.

I started editing with one of the templates, and it took me a few minutes to figure out the interface layout. I had to expand the timeline clips with the arrow button on the left side in order to see all the elements under one scene. From there, you could see the effects length as the green bar under each clip.

Every text clip had the ability to add a hand to it. The image above shows the different hand varieties available in Vyond. I’d say this is in the middle range of the amount of hand options that some of these sites had.

Overall, I loved the wide range of whiteboard templates available with Vyond and it was super simple to start editing!

After first signing up with Animaker and looking through their default templates, I was surprised by their lack of whiteboard templates. There was no option to search for a template, and no ‘whiteboard’ section. So, I decided to go the old fashion way and start from scratch!

When I first went into the editor, this tutorial graphic popped up. Each section came with a short video to show you how to get started with the basics. I really enjoyed this easy learning curve to get started.

I started out simple with a character and some text. I was really blown away by how much you could customize a character – everything from their skin color to their facial expressions. You could also change the way they were standing, which was a moving animation, not just a character standing still.

For the text, you could add a whole range of effects, including the hand writing, whiteboard style. For the hand, there wasn’t too many options to choose from.

Where Animaker really excelled was the customization for the characters. In the image above you can see that I could change the color of her eyebrows, clothes, and even accessories.

Even though Animaker didn’t have any whiteboard specific templates, I don’t think they really needed any. Any text and characters could be animated and turned into a whiteboard style video, so you really could have chosen from any of the templates and adjusted as you needed!

My Experience Using PowToon

All of PowToon’s templates were perfect for a whiteboard video, so that was a good start to the program. They had a lot to choose from!

I opened the template in the editor and played around with the layout. It was a little confusing how to find each individual element in the scene, but I figured out that you need to click on the icon under the timeline and drag it to where you wanted it to start in the scene.

You can use the camera button on the top to insert the effects of a camera where you can zoom in on the scene. This was a cool way to incorporate some pro level editing!

PowToon didn’t have a ton of hand variations for their whiteboard styles, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make a professional level whiteboard video. You could add a hand to any of the elements on the screen.

Another cool thing about PowToon was their branding options – you could upload your colors and fonts to your account, so that you could update any of your projects to have your branding with just one click. That’s definitely a standout feature if you’re a business.

My Experience Using Animatron Studio

This free version of Animatron Studio didn’t have any ready-made templates to start editing from, so I started a project from scratch. They did have a whole library of pre-made scenes that you could pick and choose elements from.

On the top of the screen above, you can see it’s on a “Lite” version of the interface, but if you switch to the “Expert” tab, you have the option to use a bunch of drawing tools to create your own designs.

The photo above shows the inside of the office scene folder. It contains loads of solo elements that you could use to build up a scene that looks like their office scene, or use bits and pieces to build your own scene.

I loved this because they really gave you an idea of what you could build as inspiration, without taking away any creative freedom from you.

One thing that I really liked about Animatron Studio was that you could have a hand draw anything: the text, the animated characters, the static images, etc. It wasn’t limited to only the text or static drawings like I’ve seen on other platforms.

The only downside is that this is the least amount of hand variations that I’ve seen.

If you just want any kind of hand to draw your video, then this will be fine for you. But if your branding or demographic is very specific and you were looking for a certain gender or race, then this platform wouldn’t be the best one for you.

Although all the scenes were customizable for the text and icons, it was harder to change the entire layout of the scene if that’s what you wanted to do. But they did have a big library of characters and backgrounds to choose from if you wanted to create your own scene.

Doodly also had a big variety of hand options, such as different ethnicities, colored clothing, left or right hand, and real or cartoon hands.

Overall, I enjoyed using Doodly and felt like it was easy to navigate. However, I felt like the style of whiteboard video was quite different than many of the other softwares since it’s strictly a doodle video. If you’re unsure at all about what this looks like, I would definitely go to their website and check out a sample video before purchasing anything!

RawShorts had a lot of whiteboard templates to choose from. A few of them were full length videos, but a lot of them were short five second scenes. Once you’re in the editor with your scene, it was easy to drag in another templated scene into the video.

The RawShorts editor looked very similar to many of the other editors on this page. You could customize the text, objects and characters on the screen, as well as adjusting its length and the way it animates on and off.

I really liked how you could have the hand draw on any object or character as well as the text. Not all of the softwares can do this.

RawShorts has a limited variety of hands to choose from, but it might just cover the basics enough to be fine for what you need.

One feature that stood out on RawShorts was their categorized library of characters and objects. The characters were sorted by gender and the objects were sorted by activity. This made is really easy to find what I was looking for. In some other software, it wasn’t sorted as well or the large icons distracted from the categories.
